Pressy is a new gadget looking for funding on Kickstarter which claims to bring simplicity back to your Android phone, performing basic tasks with a button that plugs directly into your headphones socket.

While nearly all modern smartphones rely on touchscreen technology for navigation, Pressy takes a small step back – allowing you to access a flashlight, take a photo or send your location at just the press(y) of a button.

As evidenced by our roundup earlier this year, there are a lot of apps and desktop software out there that allow the pairing of an Android smartphone to a Windows or a Mac computer. Most manufacturers (such as Samsung and HTC) even offer their own software, which ships with many of their devices or is downloadable from their website. Better video quality with less bandwidth and no third-party code

Some of us may have noticed an increase in Google+ Hangouts quality in recent weeks, but the bump to 720p HD video is more than a simple settings change — it's the move to a brand new video codec called VP8. Prior to this transition, Google was using the more widely-known H.264 to handle video in Hangouts but has run into issues handling multiple video streams at high quality with the codec.

VP8 is a royalty-free and open codec that brings several improvements for the end user, including higher video quality — which is rolling out to everyone now — and group video calling in the browser without any additional plugins. The overall reduced bandwidth required for VP8 video also means that Google can now serve up higher quality streams with even less data.

An overwhelming 79 percent of all mobile malware threats target devices running Google's Android operating system, according to a joint unclassified memo from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and Department of Justice.

Repix has launched an Android version of its photo editing app after the iOS equivalent was downloaded four million times in just five months.

The app – by Finnish developer Sumoing – is not just a quick and simple port, but a brand new version optimised for Android devices with additional support for the Samsung S-Pen stylus.

Repix comes with all the basic editing options you’d expect – including cropping, colour balance, saturation etc – but there’s also the option to ‘remix’ your photos by painting them with a range of different effects. Using a varied suite of brush options users can alter their images to suit their taste, offering a more intuitive after-effects solution than Instagram’s filters.

As with any mobile OS, there are a lot of ingredients that go into Android’s mix, and though many of us share likes and dislikes, each of us has a set of favourite features. In my case, Android’s tight integration with the Google Apps services I use on a daily basis makes life a great deal easier, and it was one of the primary reasons I chose to switch to a phone powered by the little green robot.

One key example of this is Gmail. The official app Google provides on Android is brilliantly designed, providing the instantaneousness of IMAP, with the intuitive operation of swipe-to-archive. However, as a (predominantly) Gmail user myself, it had never occurred to me that this glorious messaging experience is not extended to those Android users who rely on email providers other than Google. That seems a real shame.

Auto-Awesome is a really, well, awesome feature for Google+ Photos that was revealed at the I/O that makes animated, filmstrip, or panoramic versions of your photos automatically once they’ve been uploaded. Today’s update to the Android, iOS and desktop Google+ app enables notifications for whenever your photos are auto-awesome-ified.


The update, which also includes various bug fixes, is rolling out as we post.

I created this application out of my need as I used S Memo for taking notes, meeting minutes and using the widgets as the sticky notes. I found memo to be the closest one but widgets was broken and I decided to create a new application based on SPen SDK 2.1

Features of GNote 
1. Multiple widgets which remains even after reboot. Widgets are updated as soon as the corresponding note is edited.
2. Multiple pages with easy navigation
3. Update existing widgets note
4. Simple toolbar which can be hidden.
5. Notes Gallery for managing notes. (image of the first page of the note is shown in notes gallery)

With the launch of the original Google Nexus 7 well over a year ago, we saw the first appearance of the interface affectionately known as “Phablet UI.” Not quite the standard 10″ tablet layout that we had first seen in Honeycomb and certainly not the phone layout; this new layout was essentially a combination of the two depending on orientation, application, and so on. Many have grown to tolerate and even favor the layout on the 7″ form factor, and there is certainly good rationale behind the shift. However, this isn’t the whole story, as its effects on SystemUI.apk also caused the Android soft keys and notification area to become separated and thus require more display space on an already cramped screen.

Ever since Paranoid Android appeared some time ago, we’ve been easily able to swap both layouts and dpi on a per-app basis. This meant that if we wanted to, we could easily keep all applications at default, and only modify SystemUI.apk to show up in tablet layout. This allows us to combine the notification and softkey areas, while leaving everything else untouched. However, there are those who would prefer to stay as close to stock as possible, and they would have previously been out of luck.

Now, thanks to XDA Forum Member Caldair and previous work done by a host of other developers cited in his thread, you can get Tablet UI for SystemUI.apk on the 2013 Nexus 7 running stock, rooted JSS15Q. The modification is not without its faults, though. For starters, applying the mod seems to not play nicely with the stock launcher, so users must install an aftermarket launcher. Secondly, the quick toggles will no longer work when the modification is applied. Despite the flaws, however, many will be eager to make the most of the limited screen real estate and switch to Tablet UI. Best of all, the developer has provided restore files for those who may have forgotten to create a backup of the original files before flashing.
Head over to the modification thread to get started. And those looking to get even more control of their layouts on a per-app basis should give the excellent Paranoid Android a shot.
